Welcome to Artsy Baby, a weekly update of taste and takes from Studio No Mames, the painting workshop of famed Beltway artists Karina Gutierrez and Pablo Manríquez.
Some Takes:
“Wa’ya won for et?” — Derrick
“A watched pot never boils, liberals.” — Pablo
“Don’t remove art you disagree with. Add bigger, better art alongside it. That’s just a mark of a sophisticated city.” — KMG
“We didn’t need trophies. We just did it for the pizza party and the neighborhood glory and that was enough.” — KMG
Wet Paintings:
KARINA: “The Wave 2” in copper, blue, and naples orange, plus three yet-unnamed figures, all on 8x8inch canvases, including a figure in black casting a long shadow across a canvas primed in Gamblin’s luxurious gold pigment.
PABLO: oil portraits of Stephen Cheung (24x36 inch canvas) and Dr. Nasouli (24x30 inch canvas), plus a wood burned effigy of Frederick Douglass (12x12 inch board), his first artwork using heat as a medium.
Mood Board:
All of Melania’s UK fits, esp. the yellow dinner dress with lavender sash.
One tiny gold earring depicting Saturn ringed in silver.
Six Ranch Water cans icing in an Igloo cooler, to share.
